Chhep Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) was first established by Government Sub-Decree in
2002 under the auspice of Preah Vihear Protected Forest. This protected area totals 190,027 hectares and, until 2016 the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) was responsible for its management. Since May 2016, jurisdiction of CWS was transferred to the Ministry of Environment (MoE). It is located in northern Preah
Vihear Province, and borders Thailand and Lao People’s Democratic Republic. It is a part of Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, which is one of the 25 global hotspots on our planet. The southwestern part of the wildlife sanctuary is contiguous with Preah Roka Wildlife Sanctuary, which forms a corridor between CWS and Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary. CWS is a protected area containing part of the largest contiguous tract of deciduous dipterocarp forest in the northern plains of Cambodia.
The site is supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia program.
Checklists published with support from Arcadia Open Access, project supported by USAID Greening Prey Lang (USAID GPL), Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP), Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund (CEPF), Mekong Region Land Governance Project (MRLG project) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
Evergreen, semi-evergreen, dry deciduous dipterocarp forest, and grassland habitats.
