Descrição

This dataset documents wildlife presence and activity in urban and peri-urban environments using a network of camera traps deployed since 2023. The project aims to better understand how wild species use urban spaces and how urbanization gradients influence their spatial distribution and behavior.

Camera traps were installed across multiple monitoring sites located within cities and surrounding areas. Species detections were recorded and aggregated annually to provide a standardized overview of wildlife occurrence and activity patterns over time.

The dataset includes camera trap detections of multiple mammal species across urban and peri-urban sites, summarized by year of monitoring.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

Nenhuma descrição disponível

Título Monitoring mammals in the city using camera traps
Financiamento The monitoring was carried out as part of the BoundaryBoar project funded by the National Research Agency (ANR project ANR-22-CE03-0002).

Métodos de Amostragem

Wildlife monitoring was performed using passive infrared camera traps installed at fixed locations. Cameras operated continuously and automatically recorded animal detections through photographs or videos when motion was detected. Monitoring sites were distributed to capture variation in urbanization intensity and habitat structure. Species detections were extracted from image data and aggregated annually for each camera location, providing standardized occurrence and abundance indicators.

Área de Estudo The study was conducted across multiple urban and peri-urban sites in southern France. Camera traps were deployed along an urbanization gradient, including densely built city centers, suburban residential areas, green infrastructures, and surrounding natural or semi-natural habitats. This spatial design enabled the assessment of wildlife occurrence and activity across contrasting landscape contexts, from highly urbanized zones to peripheral environments.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. Camera traps were deployed following a standardized installation protocol to optimize detection probability while minimizing disturbance. Devices were positioned along wildlife movement paths, habitat edges, or resource areas. Images and videos were periodically retrieved, annotated, and manually reviewed to identify species and count individuals. Detection records were compiled, quality-checked, and aggregated by camera site and monitoring year. Geographic coordinates were validated, taxonomic names standardized, and data formatted according to Darwin Core standards prior to publication.
