Project Data

A collaborative project of higher education institution to monitore biodivesity on all campuses at Rennes with a participative approach

Title Bioblitz on Rennes campuses
Identifier BioBlitz Rennes Campus
Funding All involved higher education institution contribute to funding
Study Area Description Green spaces in highly urbanized campus area
Design Description Using a participative approach, sampling involves established research protocols and standardized citizen science protocols as well as opportunistic observations.

The personnel involved in the project:

Julie Clement
  • Originator
Nathalie Boulier-Monthean

Sampling Methods

Standardized citizen science protocols, classical research methods and opportunistic observations were used for sampling

Study Extent The various campus habitats were mapped and sampling zones within each campus were designated. Sampling occurs during each Bioblitz event, nevertheless during each Bioblitz event the sampling frequency is random
Quality Control Non-expert participants in the Bioblitz were accompanied by naturalists and researchers. Collating the biodiversity data was implemented or supervised by the experts

Method step description:

  1. The first step was the observation in the field, collecting specimens and identifying species using microscopes and field guides. The second step was collecting data by the experts. And the third step was collating, verifying and formating the data in the field

Introduction The ecologial management and sustainability of natural areas are strongly influenced by social, economic and ecologic dynamics, and these areas are therefore considered socio-ecosystems (McGinnis and OStrom 2014). Particulary in cities, the management of green spaces are strongly linked to the needs and activities of the human population. There are numerous initiatives and political strategies to promote urban biodiversity (e.g.green and blue grid, urban agriculture, Shwartz et al. 2013). Several functions of urban biodiversity are recognized as beneficial to the lives of city habitants( e.g. air quality, urban climate, well-being[Chiesurra 2004, Pickett et al. 2011]). The question of how to manage green spaces to promote biodiversity that fits in with the objectives of sustainable development has been adressed by the campuses within the city of Rennes. The research institutions of Rennes collaborate in a common project to monitor urban biodiversity and the impact of management practices. Biodiversity on the Rennes campuses is a sustainable development issue and the institutions aim to involve users in the process of studying biodiversity and implementing a management strategy of green spaces that favor biodiversity on campus
Getting Started The occurrences of each Bioblitz are collected by observation zone. Mapping and protocols are specific to each campus and its habitats.Naturalists specialised in different taxa provide a global view of campus biodiversity at a given time. The recurrence of the Bioblitzes over time allows for monitoring the evolution of flora and fauna according to campus management and to the impact of climate change.
Purpose

The aim of this BioBlitz is to survey the plant and animal species present on our campuses. The results will enable us to gain a better understanding about urban biodiversity to adapt management practices of green spaces and development projects on the campuses. It will also serve as a basis for monitoring of biodiversity changes over the time and for evaluation impact of management actions undertaken

Maintenance Description New data will be implemented when more BioBlitz data becomes available and after future BioBlitz events
