Description

This dataset, collected in 2014 and 2017, documents the diversity and structure of ant communities in urban parks of the city of Montpellier (France).

The objective of the study was to better understand the spatial distribution and species composition of ant assemblages in urban green spaces, as well as their variability among parks.

Sampling was conducted across a network of public parks representative of different urban contexts within Montpellier. Standardized trapping protocols were implemented to collect ants inhabiting soil and leaf litter habitats.

The dataset notably includes ants occurrence data and species composition per park and trapping point, derived from field campaigns conducted in 2014 and 2017.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 31,885 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Field data from the 2014 and 2017 campaigns were compiled and harmonized into a tabular format. Species names were standardized, and sampling metadata (date and geographic coordinates) were associated to each record. Records were then reshaped so that each row corresponds to one taxon at one sampling event (date × location), with abundance values converted to integer counts and zeros used for non-detections. Taxonomic information (including class, order, and family) and stable identifiers (e.g., TAXREF-based IDs when available) were added. Finally, the dataset was mapped to Darwin Core terms and exported as a GBIF-ready occurrence file.

Study Extent The study was conducted in public urban parks within the city of Montpellier (southern France). Sampling took place during two field campaigns in 2014 and 2017, targeting a set of parks representative of contrasting urban contexts and green-space characteristics. The dataset is structured at the scale of individual trapping points within parks, allowing comparison of ant community composition across parks and between years.
