Maurice Gaignon fut ingénieur chimiste à Rhône-Poulenc à Lyon. Il mena de front sa carrière et ses recherches en mycologie. Spécialiste des Heterobasidiomycetes, il a été membre actif de la Société Linnéenne de Lyon et président de la section Mycologie. Son fungarium, donné à l'Herbier LY, contient plus de 6500 spécimens. Les notes et documents de travail associés sont conservés par la famille.
