Descrição
The objective of this dataset is to compile 0.25 m2 quadrats and the abundance of macro-phytes covering area beneath these quadrats taken across the intertidal areas of the Tagus Es-tuary and Ria de Aveiro Coastal Lagoon over the boreal summer of 2022. The data recorded percentage cover of the seagrass (Zostera noltei (Hornemann 1832)) and macroalgae, Ulva sp., Chaetomorpha sp., Fucus vesiculosus (Linnaeus 1853) and Agarophyton vermiculophyllum (Ohmi Gurgel, J.N. Norris & Fredericq, 2018.) Quadrat photographs were taken between the 13th and 17th of June 2022. This dataset has been acquired to validate maps of the spatial dis-tribution of Zostera noltei obtained at the ecosystem scale with remote sensing images and notably Sentinel 2 with a 10 to 20 m pixel resolution. Therefore, some quadrats were spatially arranged to form a cross shape to fill a 10 m satellite pixel.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Cobertura Geográfica
Atlantic Coast of Portugal. The Tagus Estuary, found on the Western Portuguese Coast, is the mouth of the longest river in the Iberian peninsula. The Estuary is protected by the Tagus Es-tuary Nature Reserve as an IUCN category IV habitat and species management area. Ria de Aveiro is a shallow coastal lagoon located on the North West coast of Portugal. The only connection to the Atlantic Ocean is through a narrow channel 1.3 km in length, 350 m wide and 20 m deep. Ria de Aveiro is a Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research (LTsER) platform (https://www.lterportugal.pt/riadeaveiro) with several important habitats, it is included in the Nature 2000 network and is classified as a Special Protection Area containing Sites of Com-munity Importance.

Métodos de Amostragem
Quadrats (0.25 m2) placed on benthic intertidal vegetation were photographed and images were loaded into ImageJ software. Polygons were drawn around visible extent of vegetation types, which allowed the percentage cover of each species or genus per quadrat to be calculated.
Área de Estudo | Sampling was carried out across intertidal areas during low tide. |
---|---|
Controle de Qualidade | Images were analysed consistently, with 10% of images being checked by expert commentators. The dataset was adjusted to the Darwin Core specifications (Wieczorek et al. 2012) in order to be published in the GBIF network. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Quadrat Photographed alongside taking dGPS location (Trimble Geo 7).
